🎙️📺 Hammond Creek students are making their mark across Georgia!

Recently, a select group of Hammond Creek Middle School student journalists traveled to Atlanta for a special recognition event at Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB), celebrating their published work through the GPB Student Voices Collective.

Congratulations to Kami Harrison, Harper Weeks, Brandt Bowers, Tucker Rewis, Ayo Ilesanmi, and Sofia Hernandez-Lopez for representing HCMS with professionalism, creativity, and excellence.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable? These students were the only middle school students from anywhere in Georgia in attendance. While only one other middle school in the state has had students published through the program, Hammond Creek students have produced at least seven published stories this year, with additional projects already in the pipeline.

Each published project required students to go beyond traditional writing by creating multimedia stories that included a written article paired with either a podcast episode or video segment. Their work demonstrates the research, communication, and digital storytelling skills that are essential for today's media landscape.

During their visit, students toured GPB's professional studios, explored television and radio production spaces, met with journalists and media professionals, and were recognized for their contributions to public media in Georgia. Seeing our students engage with industry experts and step into the spaces where statewide news is created was an unforgettable experience.

This program continues to grow across Georgia. Three years ago, I was one of 50 educators who helped launch the initiative. Today, only two educators from that original group remain involved, and I am proud that Hammond Creek continues to be a leader in student journalism and storytelling. The program has evolved from its original cohort to a dedicated network of 26 educators across the state who are committed to amplifying student voices.

We are incredibly proud of these students for sharing their stories with audiences across Georgia and for representing Hammond Creek so well. Their hard work, curiosity, and journalistic integrity continue to set the standard for what middle school students can accomplish.

🐯 Way to go, Tigers!
